Q. Will I absorb calcium if I don’t take vitamin D? -Julie

Q. I was having a lot muscle cramping in my legs and feet so I started taking a Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc Supplement.  The cramping has gone down but I was wondering if the Calcium was even getting absorbed since I don’t take them with any Vit D?  I also heard that green tea stops the absorption of Calcium and I have been drinking a lot of the Sencha Green tea powder in my water every day.  Thanks Dr. H! – Julie

Hi Julie,

As long as your vitamin D level is normal you will absorb the calcium.  You don’t have to actually take vitamin D at the same precise moment you take the calcium.

Green tea will not adversely effect your calcium absorption.  Research shows that citrus can help your body absorb up to 5x as many of green tea’s antioxidants, so a punch of lemon or orange with your green tea might be a great addition.

Hope that helps,

Dr. Gary Huber
