Q. What’s the deal with Agave Nectar – sap or high fructose corn syrup? -Kyle

What is the real deal with Agave Nectar? I keep reading 2 sides. One side says yes its fine its just heated sap. The other says it is the same as high fructose corn syrup (aka the Frankenstein Monster) just made from the agave plant rather than corn. Thanks!  -Kyle

 Hi Kyle,

Agave nectar is a good lightly processed sweetener that is nothing like high fructose corn syrup.  I would have you go to www.allaboutagave.com website that offers information on how agave nectar is acquired.  I think it is a good sugar alternative.

High fructose corn syrup involves some major industrial machinery and chemicals to produce it. Yes there is some fructose in agave nectar but there is fructose in ALL fruits.  The problem arises when we eat processed foods that have no business containing fructose and it appears in large amounts.

Use agave nectar in moderation and be happy.

In addition, you may find this reader’s question about alternative sweeteners helpful.
