Q. What treatment do you recommend for a newly diagnosed herniated C-6 disc? -Diane
What treatment would you recommend for a newly diagnosed herniated C-6 disc; investigated because of muscle atrophy in my forearm? I was referred to a neurologist but haven’t scheduled an appointment yet; I don’t want surgery unless it is a last resort. -Diane
Hi Diane,
If you have a C-6 disc issue that is severe enough to cause muscle atrophy then this is not something to be taken lightly.
Surgery may be your best option but get the advice of at least two different surgeons. Treatments vary and pursuing an option that sounds right for you is a matter of searching.
For lumbar discs I have some great options as my wife has struggled with this problem over the past two years and we did a lot of searching to find some effective options. But cervical disc is different and I do not have any experience navigating the surgical waters of this issue. I would recommend some adjunctive treatment that could reduce your discomfort while you are seeking physician consults. These options are designed to reduce the amount of swelling in the soft tissue and take pressure off of the nerve which is leading to your atrophy.
Omega 3 oils are great anti-inflammatories without the drawbacks of NSAID’s like ibuprofen and other drugs. They can even be taken in conjunction with medication if meds are needed. I recommend 2000 to 3000 mg of EPA + DHA (omega 3′s).
I also see good results with a product called Wobenzym PS at a dose of 2 to 3 tablets three times day between meals. These digestive enzymes are capable of removing fluid and inflammatory collagen fiber that puts pressure on the nerve.
You will want to consult with your doctor first to make sure that you do not have any contraindications.
Avoiding sugary foods and possibly wheat may also serve to reduce general body inflammation thus reduce pressure from the area of inflammation.
I wish you luck with your delicate issue and don’t be afraid to ask the doctors you meet with for their opinion on non-invasive treatment options.
Best of luck,
Dr. Gary Huber
