Spring Cleaning = Detox Time

Spring Cleaning = Detox Time

With spring’s arrival we throw open our windows and air out our stuffy house and rejuvenate our bodies in the sun. Spring is a natural time to think of detoxifying our winter hibernation. There are many so-called “Detox” products on the market but many are little more than plant fiber and bowel stimulants. What we really need to detoxify our bodies is to facilitate proper removal of waste from our bowel, liver, kidneys and skin. These are our primary detox organs.

Daily detoxification is simple and should be a life habit. This includes drinking a minimum of 80 ounces of filtered water daily. If you don’t have a proper water filter on your home water source then this spring may be a great time to explore your options. Secondly make a statement with your diet by eating organic whole vegetables and fruits daily. Increase vegetable intake to a minimum of 6 servings daily and keep fruit to 1 or 2 servings.

The liver is the primary organ of detoxification. Detoxification is a three step process. In phase I, the liver takes fat soluble toxins from our tissue and converts them to a more toxic water soluble form. Phase 2 “conjugates” these water soluble toxins to a carrier so it is packages for removal. Phase 3 is the actual discharge of the toxin thru the body via our stool and urine. Each of these phases requires certain nutrients to facilitate efficient function and removal. If something is lacking then the system malfunctions and we feel funky or experience symptoms such as headache, body ache or a host of other complaints.

Phase I – Nutrients needed for detox
Amino Acids Antioxidants
Riboflavin (Vit B2) Choline
Niacin (Vit B3) Vitamin C
Pyridoxine (Vit B6) Vitamin E
Cyanocobalamin Copper
Folic acid Magnesium
Glutathione Zinc
Flavonoids Omega 3 fatty acids
Phase II – Nutrients needed for detox
Methyl donors Selenium
Amino acids Riboflavin
Folate Pantothenic acid
Fiber Vitamin C
Magnesium Zinc
Manganese Taurine

Other elements that have been shown to benefit the body’s efforts in the detoxification process include: chlorella, N-acetyl-cysteine, garlic extracts, alpha lipoic acid, green tea extract, and a host of antioxidants to absorb free radicals.

Lastly we must include the good probiotic flora that inhabit the bowel. It is estimated that a healthy intestinal tract is home to more than 100 trillion bacteria which if combined would weigh roughly 2 and a half pounds. These friendly inhabitants of our body act as a second liver and work to detoxify many nasty chemicals and other waste products of digestion.

I know this can be daunting task to assemble these elements so let me offer you some quick and easy guidance. There is a product specifically designed for this purpose called Metabolic Response that I like for it’s quality and safety. It is not a heroic heavy metal detox that can lead to problems but more of a comprehensive cleansing program for bowel, liver and kidney.

Metabolic Response is conveniently packaged in simple morning and evening packets and provides everything mentioned above for effective detoxification and more. It is a complete multivitamin, a complete probiotic, loaded with the proper antioxidants and contains the primary amino acids needed to facilitate proper liver, kidney and bowel detoxification. This product combined with a healthy diet will facilitate clearance of toxic heavy metals, pollutants, pesticides, and other harmful chemicals as it restores proper function.

Want to know your level of toxicity? A simple urine test for persistent organic pollutants and heavy metals can easily be done to quantify your need for further detoxification. These are home-based urine tests and are very affordable and reliable. If interested then simply contact my office for more detail.

More . . you want more? Whey protein has been shown to facilitate detoxification and remove heavy metals from the body. But not just ANY whey protein. As I have written before on this website, I am a big fan of non-denatured whey for it’s immune supportive role. My favorite whey protein is Thorne’s “organic”, non-denatured whey from New Zealand. This is a most unique product as it contains many immune factors to build your immune system as it restores detoxification pathways. It is not pasteurized as most whey proteins are. It is cold filtered from cows that have never seen an antibiotic or hormone injection in their lives. And one more thing . . .  it taste great and has passed the “kids test” for flavor.

Spring is here so get your body moving in a healthy direction with a month or two of detoxification so you can enjoy a lean and clean summer.
