Drink Green Tea, Keep More Teeth

Drink Green Tea, Keep More Teeth

Nothing can beat brushing and flossing for healthy teeth and gums, but drinking green tea might be a good plan B. According to a Japanese study, drinking green tea may improve dental health and reduce the risk of loosing teeth by about 20 percent. Drinking more appears to add additional risk reductions, according to the Ohsaki Study and published in Preventive Medicine.

Previous studies have reported that catechins found in green tea may inhibit the action of oral bacteria linked to development of periodontal disease. According to some studies, the concentration of tea catechin to deliver the said effect must be more than 100 mg/100 ml. Typically, a preparation of green tea may contain catechin concentrations of 50-150 mg/100 ml; this amount might be sufficient to aid tooth retention.

The study, led by Yasushi Koyama from Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine, followed 25,078 participants aged 40 to 64. By measuring tooth loss in people with up to 20 teeth still remaining, the researchers calculated that one to two cups of green tea per day was associated with an 18 percent reduction in tooth loss risk. Participants who consumed more tea (up to 5 cups) increased the odds at keeping their choppers by 23 percent.

Boost Your Impact

Those of you who have been to any Healthy Alter Ego event know we are a big fan of consuming an organic sencha green tea powder. The reason? Green tea contains a specific antioxidant compound (a catechins called EGCG) that has scientists all a flutter about the promising health benefits of green tea on a whole host of health issues. Turns out very little of that compound makes it in to “brewed tea” (compare catechin amounts in whole dry leaves vs. brewed), so we encourage you to maximize those catechins by using an organic green tea powder for your cold or hot green tea beverages. The nutrient density is far greater because with a powder you literally consume the leaf, not just brewed water.

Other Reported Benefits of Green Tea Catechins

  • Slow aging
  • Regenerate and repair cells
  • Boost metabolism
  • Help fight cancer
  • Support heart health
  • Ease inflammation
  • Calms the mind & boosts focus
  • Increased cognition

Shoot, if green tea catechins can do all that – get as many as you can!

I like this idea – especially when I’m on the go and don’t have time to brush during the day! I had never heard of sencha green tea powder. Do you have to refrigerate it?

    • Hi Jane – no, you don’t have to refrigerate it. And you don’t have to brew it! I keep a tin in my office and kitchen. Put a serving in a bottle of water, shake and voila. The nutritional equivalent of 15-20 cups of brewed tea and even more EGCG. We’ve been really excited to have found an organic Japanese source!

Jo, I love the Sencha green tea as you know. Just one more awesome reason to keep drinking the tea.
