The Guts to Overcome. Let’s Do It Together

3. Exercise: I have been biking once per week but I need to increase my intensity to heighten my anaerobic threshold. After reading Forrest Griffin’s new book I have an idea to do 3, 5 minute intervals of a 85% effort, once per week. These intervals will be brutal and cause much pain but what doesn’t kill me only makes me stronger. Pain is temporary but being embarrassed on a hill climb with a group of other rider’s lasts forever. Bring on the challenge. I’d rather grow than die.
4. Kids: My kids have lots of new Christmas toys and if I don’t pay attention they will be off to college in the blink of an eye. I will dedicate one hour each and every night to sit and enjoy the new toy, new video game, new book, or whatever is capturing their attention these days so that they don’t become more attached to their toy than they are to their Dad. I will plug into my kids because they feed the child in me and represent the very breath of life that awakens me each day.
These are just a few of my plans. I have categories for family (especially my wife), work, spirituality, exercise, and diet. I only share them with you to give you an idea of how to write a plan that has potential. Give it some detail, give it a “why” and give it a time line.
The longer and more involved it is then the more REAL it seems and in fact it begins to feel like it’s already a part of your new direction.
Learn to love “change.” We are all evolving every single day. So use this great time of year and the upcoming New Years to act as a pivot point for a new direction and change in your life.
Your body will go wherever the mind directs it.
If you don’t direct it then the soda and chips manufacturers will be more than happy to do it for you.
If you already have great life habits then go over them again and find the weak links or look around and see what aspect of your life may have gotten ignored. It is so difficult to focus on self, family, career, community and God all at the same time without getting out of balance.
This is the week to take inventory and realign your sites.
January 1st is the day we weigh in and see the results of our holiday challenge. You have the better part of a week to exercise your buns off and get that kitchen in alignment with your goals so get hopping.
Happy New Year.

Just the article I needed to read tonight! I love it. I have been doing lots of thinking about what I want to accomplish in 2010, my last year in my 30′s. I like your suggestions to make very specific goals for myself and to write them down. Great advice, thanks!
Your suggested details about the food plan put my original 2010 goals to shame. I’m rethinking them now and feel much more confident about it. A seemingly simple, but powerful point. Thanks!
You got me with point #4.
Hey you guys and gals,
I have not stopped into my local Starbucks once in 2010. I still love them and I’ll be back but I have had organic sencha green tea every morning for the past week and felt GREAT!!!. I have done my interval training and did 4 three minute intervals with a one minute rest and felt GREAT!!! I have spent an hour (or more) playing silly childish games with my kids and it’s made me silly and childish and I feel GREAT!!! I love 2010 and you should too. Make a stand, proclaim your destiny and get on board with your hearts desire. Live your life . . . it’s yours.
